Exploring the Seven Chakras: A Beginner's Guide to Understanding and Balancing Your Energy Centres

What are chakras? Chakras are thought to be spinning disks of energy that should stay opened and aligned. Each disk corresponds to bundles of nerves and major organs and can affect our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being.

The seven main chakras run along the spine, starting at the base of the spine(sacrum) up to the top of the head. When we understand what chakras are, how they work and how to balance them, we can positively influence ourselves to be healthier.

The Root Chakra - Muladhara

Location: Base of the spine

Emotion: Safety

Action: I Am

Colour: Red

Element: Earth

Crystals: Red Jasper, Obsidian, Hematite, Bloodstone, Black Tourmaline

Essential Oils: Cedarwood, Pine, Cypress, Black Pepper

Greatest Power: Source of Survival

The root chakra is your base or foundation, it represents safety and security and helps you feel in control of your life, feel grounded and able to withstand challenges. The root chakra controls issues and energies connected to; survival, food, clothing, shelter, money, safety, the physical body and earthy things. It is directly related to family and the beliefs that support the early formations of identity and sense of belonging.

A blocked root chakra can manifest physical things like; swelling in feet and legs, bladder or colon problems, and arthritis. Emotionally through feelings of insecurity, stress, lacking self-esteem and low energy/procrastination.

When your root is open you will feel grounded, safe and secure, physically and emotionally.

The Sacral Chakra - Swadhisthana

Location: Below navel, hips, low back, reproductive organs

Emotion: Sensuality

Action: I Feel

Colour: Orange

Element: Water

The sacral chakra is the centre or emotions, feelings and stimulates pleasure. It plays an active role in our sexuality and expression of our sexual needs and desires. The sacral chakra controls issues and energies connected to; sexuality, creativity, and finances. It is directly tied to the third eye, if the sacral is out of balance you will not be able to connect to a higher level.

A blocked sacral chakra can manifest physical things like; lower back and/or hip pain, reproductive issues, low libido, impotency, and addiction. Emotionally through feelings of being “stuck”, bitterness, fear, manipulation, worry and lack of self-worth.

When your sacral is open you will be attuned to your feelings, comfortable setting boundaries, comfortable with your sexual desires and have concern for others.

The Solar Plexus Chakra - Manipura

Location: Stomach

Emotion: Empowerment

Action: I Do

The solar plexus chakra is responsible for confidence and self-esteem, as well as helping you feel in control of your life. The solar plexus chakra controls issues and energies connected to; personal power, individuality, having a sense of self, and believing in oneself. The solar plexus regulates the energy flow to all other chakras.

A blocked solar plexus chakra can manifest physical things like; back pain, nausea, ulcers, indigestion, and bloating. Emotionally through feelings of panic, depression, anxiety, fear, and low self-esteem.

When your solar plexus is open you will feel confident and powerful and will never feel you must sink into the crowd.

The Heart Chakra - Anahata

Location: Chest/Heart

Emotion: Love

Action: I Love

Colour: Green

Element: Air

The heart chakra is associated with love, compassion, empathy, and forgiveness. It embodies your ability to love unconditionally and is responsible for moving love throughout your life. The heart chakra controls issues and energies connected to relationships with oneself and others. The heart is the point in which we heal and is the bridge between physical and spiritual planes.

A blocked heart chakra can manifest physical things like; shoulder and/or arm pain, high blood pressure, lumps and bumps on breasts, poor circulation, and respiratory issues. Emotionally through feelings of hatred, grief, anger, inability to forgive or move on from past experiences and lack of compassion.

When your heart is open it allows you to open yourself up to love, forgiveness, kindness, and compassion. It allows you to give and receive unconditional love from all living beings.

The Throat Chakra - Vishuddha

Location: Neck

Emotion: Truth

Action: I Speak

Colour: Blue

Element: Ether (Space)

The throat chakra is responsible for communication, self-expression, and the ability to speak your personal truth. The throat chakra controls issues and energies connected to; the universe's will, your personal will, and access to other dimensions. Being honest in what you need, aids in receiving what you need quicker.

A blocked throat chakra can manifest physical things like; throat or voice problems, thyroid imbalances, and neck pain. Emotionally through feelings of shyness, denial, cowardice, the inability to express thoughts, and social anxiety.

When your throat is open you have no fear speaking your truth, you can express your thoughts and you have good communication with others.

The Third Eye Chakra - Ajna

Location: Forehead

Emotion: Imagination

Action: I See

Colour: Indigo

Element: Light

Crystals: Amethyst, Lapis Lazuli, Sapphire, Moonstone, Lepidolite,

The third eye chakra is responsible for perception. awareness and spiritual communication. The third eye chakra controls issues and energies connected to; precognition, inner sight, clairvoyance, intuition, seeing goals and desires, seeing situations clearly, probing and questioning. Being psychic truly means you have an extra sensory in your body that aids in perception.

A blocked third eye chakra can manifest physical things like; headaches, migraines, sight issues, sinus discomfort and concentration problems. Emotionally through feelings of mental chaos, delusion and unaccepting.

When your third eye is open you will be able to see the truth of self and others, accepting the layers and multidimensionality of reality. You will be provided with wisdom and insight, as well as a deepened spiritual connection.

The Crown Chakra - Sahasrara

Location: Top of head

Emotion: Bliss

Action: I Understand

Colour: Voilet

Element: Consciousness

The crown chakra is the meeting point between the physical body and universe and soul and embraces your gratitude for life. The crown chakra controls issues and energies connected to; spiritual connection, connection with your soul and life’s purpose, spiritual energies, divine inspiration and healing. You will become truly confident in Who You Are and Why You Are Here when you inspire greatness in other people.

A blocked crown chakra can manifest physical things like; poor skin conditions, brain and nervous system issues and fibromyalgia. Emotionally through feelings of apathy, depression, lack faith, and have no joy from life.

When your crown is open dreams are clear, more vivid and feel more real. You have a deeper connection to all living things and you feel calm and peaceful, even when under pressure.

Supporting Your Chakras

Reiki is the most effective way to support, open and align chakras. However, there are many ways you can support them on your own:

Meditation: You can work through chakras using different meditation techniques. When of the most popular ways of doing this in visualizing the colour of the chakra you are working on beaming on the location of that chakra.

Breath Work: One of the best ways to promote free flowing energy in all chakras in through deep breathing techniques. Breathing is known to cleanse the energetic body.

Yoga: Specific yoga poses can stimulate the chakras; removing blockages and promoting free flowing energy.

Sound Frequencies: Listening to healing music tuned to the frequencies of each chakra can help in supporting.

Food: Each chakra is associated with a colour. Eating foods that match the colour of the chakra you are working with is said to be beneficial.

Crystals: All crystals have individual properties and many match those properties of your chakras. If your crystal has them same properties and/or is the same colour as the chakra you are working on it can help support it.

Essential Oils: All essential oils have specific qualities matching those qualities with that of essential oils can aid in supporting chakras.

Affirmations: Another method of balancing a specific chakra is affirmations. Repeating affirmations directs healing energy to restore balance to that aspect of your body, and your life.

Final Thoughts

While each chakra has its own distinct properties, they work as a system. It is important to maintain each chakra in order for them to all flow freely.

Having your chakra system open, alined and flowing freely means complete harmony can exist between the physical body, mind, and spirit.
